That morning, the Taasa family was in three different places. Separated parents, Gil and Sabine, live in two adjoining houses. Son Zohar (15) was with his mother. Koren (12) and Shai (6) were staying at the father's, who was murdered while trying to protect them. The eldest, 17-year-old Or, went fishing at Zikim Beach - where he was murdered.

Sabine wakes up from the sirens and runs with her son Zohar to the safe room. At the same time, Gil and his two small children, Shai and Koren, who are staying with him, rush to the shelter outside his housing unit. The unit is just metres from the house where Sabine lives. Gil removes dangerous objects from the shelter and seats the children on inverted buckets, while he stands at the entrance.
Sabine contacts her oldest son, Or, who went fishing in the morning with friends at Zikim Beach. He tells her about the missile barrage and says there is also sniper fire. He tries calming her down, says he's in a protected bathroom, and promises he won't come out of it. Soon after, terrorists invading from the sea murder Or and his friends.
Sabine calls Or again to see if he's safe. He does not answer.
Sabine and Zohar hear a loud banging at the door. She thinks it's Gil and the kids and she opens the door. In front of her are two armed terrorists, one of whom loads the rifle. She is quick enough to slam and lock the door before he shoots her. Sabine and Zohar run to the safe room, both say “Shema Israel”.
Gil and his children Koren and Shai, who had fled before to a nearby shelter, hear terrorists coming. Gil, a fire fighter and former Ravshatz (Military Ongoing Security Coordinator), manages to run and bring his gun and phone from home. On his way back he spots the terrorists and shoots at them.
Upon hearing Gil's shooting, the terrorists leave Sabine's house door and shoot at Gil. He fights them until he runs out of bullets. The terrorists take advantage of the break, approach the shelter and throw a grenade into the entrance. The grenade explodes near Gil, who absorbs most of the shrapnel with his body, thus saving the lives of his children. The shrapnel seriously injures Shai and Koren. Terrorists do a dead check on their father.
Bloodied and wounded, the children are led by the terrorists to their father's housing unit. Koren tries to communicate with the terrorists in English and asks them to let his brother, who was seriously injured in his eye, go to his mother's house - but they refuse. When he takes out the phone to translate his words into Arabic, the terrorist grabs and throws the phone at him. The terrorists tell the children not to worry because “they don't kill children.” They then open the fridge and drink Coke. They offer the children to eat, but they refuse. Terrorists go out and enter the house.
After the terrorists leave and as they hear the sounds of gunfire around them, Koren makes sure there is no one outside. He leads his little brother to their mother's house. When they reach the door, Koren knocks and says: “Mama, open I beg.” Initially, Sabine does not open up until she realizes these are her children. She opens the door despite the risk that these are terrorists who demanded the son to knock on the door. Sabine and the three children hide in the safe room. Koren tells his mother that Gil was killed, but she finds it hard to believe.
Sabine realizes that her children's injuries are severe and begs Itai Levi, a member of the security squad, to evacuate them. Itai explains that a fight is being fought outside and asks her to wait patiently. He guides her on how to dress Shai and Koren's injuries.
Itai Levi arrives at the house with his security squad friend Ziv Volk and Itamar Revivo, head of Ashkelon Beach Regional Council. He shouts for Sabine to open the door, and quickly, they evacuate her and the three children to the protected vehicle. Before being evacuated, Sabine runs to Gil's body to say goodbye to him. Members of the security squad rescue the family out of the moshav.
Gil and Or Taasa are laid to rest at the cemetery in Moshav Netiv HaAsara
The family members move into an apartment donated for them in Netanya.
