A Celebratory Date Transformed into a Disaster

The Friedman family

October 7 is a special birthday date at the Friedmans' family home. Etti Friedman (80), her daughter Iris, and her grandchildren Yael and Tommy (14) were preparing to host their extended family for a celebration. But early that morning, barrages of missiles struck their Moshav, and the home security cameras captured a terrorist landing nearby

Etti Friedman lives with her daughter, Iris, and twin grandchildren, Yael and Tommy (14), in Moshav Nativ HaAsara. On this Saturday morning, the family plans a gathering to honour both Gadi's birthdate, the family’s beloved father who has passed away, and his daughter Rachel, who shares the same birth date. Etti prepares a meal in the oven for the relatives staying with her. However, when red alert sirens begin, accompanied by the sounds of explosions, Etti, Iris, and the twins take refuge in the house’s safe room. As a co-founder of Moshav Nativ HaAsara, Etti senses that this time, something unusual is unfolding.

A fence separates Moshav Nativ HaAsara from the Gaza Strip, and it is this barrier that the terrorists crossed using motorized paragliders. Etti’s son, Kobi Friedman, lives next door to her, and a security camera outside his home captures footage of an armed terrorist landing nearby. The terrorist runs toward a neighbor’s home, joining other terrorists who have raided the community from the air. Together, they unleash a spree of murder and destruction throughout the Moshav

Power and water outages begin across the Moshav, leaving families unable to stay updated with news or contact relatives for information. Cut off from all sources of communication, the family assumes the attack is a localized incident within the Moshav that security officials will resolve soon

Another of Etti’s daughters, Kalanit, who lives in Tel Aviv, wakes up to the sound of alarms and checks the news. She briefly reaches her mother, notifying the family that missile barrages are being fired across the country. She also shares a video from the news showing a terrorist breaching the border and urges her family to stay in the house's safe room. Etti, however, thinks her daughter might be exaggerating

The Moshav's WhatsApp group buzzes with messages about gunshot sounds, but uncertainty still looms large in the community. Kalanit manages to contact her family again, informing them that dozens of terrorists have infiltrated multiple communities in southern Israel. The safe room door doesn’t close properly, and the family realizes that if a terrorist breaks in, they will be unable to defend themselves. Iris, Yael, and Tommy leave the safe room and hide in the attic. Tommy plays the game “Candy Crush” on his cell phone, trying to distract himself while sending messages to friends that fail to be sent due to the collapse of the communication system. Meanwhile, Etti, who suffers from back pain, remains in the safe room with her German Shepherd

Laila, the family’s dog, slips out of the safe room and into the yard to relieve herself. Etti follows her to open the door, but a tremendous explosion echoes nearby just as she does. Panic surges through her as she quickly runs back to the safe room to hide

After hours of uncertainty, the residents of Moshav Nativ HaAsara receive instructions to pack a bag quickly and flee north. In addition to her bag, Etti takes the pot of food she has prepared earlier in the morning, escaping with her family. Iris drives quickly along roads swarmed with terrorists, heading to relatives who live in the city of Modiin. Once they arrive in Modiin, the family gathers to eat the food Etti has made for the birthday celebrations planned for that morning

After no one has been in their house since October 7, security forces enter for the first time to turn off the lights and air conditioning that have been left on. They discover that the oven, where Etti has prepared food that day, is still on, running at a low temperature, and promptly turn it off
