While hiding in the safe room, Itai and Etty Zak and their son Sagi (14) kept almost entirely silent for fear the terrorists would hear them. They had little communication with the rest of the family. After more than a day of disconnection, the tragic picture was revealed: the three were dead in the burnt-in-safe room.

When Red Color Alarms are heard in the kibbutz, Itai, Etty, 14-year-old Sagi, and the dog, Soka, enter the safe room
While fighting is underway in the kibbutz, members of the Zak family hide in the safe room. The two older children - Hadar (24) and Tomer (22), who were staying outside the kibbutz - try to contact them, but without success - there is no cell phone reception in the safe room. Thus, the two try to obtain information from neighbors in the kibbutz
Itai and Etty come out of the protected space. They talk on the phone with the son, Hadar, and say the family stayed in the safe room all morning. The father added that there was an exchange of gunfire between the army and the terrorists near their home. Etty tries to reassure Hadar and tells him that they are okay and that his brother Sagi is sleeping in the safe room
Members of the Zak family hear the echoes of the battle and the exchange of fire just outside their house and realize that army troops are already in the kibbutz
Etty's talking to her daughter, Tomer. She tells her that rounds of gunfire are heard around but that the family members are fine and all together in the safe room. A few moments later, Etty points out that she needs to speak quietly so the terrorists do not hear her. Tomer suggests that you return to the safe room and that they talk later.
The electricity and mobile networks in the kibbutz are cut out, and with them the communication of family members with their two older children. The two contacts military personnel they know, including those fighting in those moments in the kibbutz, send them a map with markings of the house and try to get information about their family
The two older siblings try to call their family members - without success. It is estimated that during the same hours, the three members of the family were shot in their home by the terrorists. In the house later found shell casings of Kalashnikov bullets were found, and bullet holes in the walls of the safe room. Large blood stains were found on the bed, where Etty and Sagi were probably hugging, and on the floor at the entrance to the safe room, where Itai and the dog, Soka, were probably staying. In addition, a magnet was discovered on the body of a terrorist found in the kibbutz pool, taken from the family's refrigerator, with “X” markings on the photograph of the family members. Neighbors testified after the fact that terrorists, disguised as IDF soldiers, knocked on doors in the kibbutz and said in Hebrew that they had come to rescue residents. Since no signs of gunfire or break-in were found on the door of the safe room, it is believed that this was the case in the Zak family home
The terrorists set fire to buildings in the kibbutz, also in the row where the Zak family lives

Hadar and Tomer contact kibbutz members and acquaintances, who ask after the family members. At the same time, rescue operations of families from the kibbutz begin and lists of names of those rescued, including from the neighborhood of the Zak family, are delivered. Their names do not appear on the lists. At the same time the family home also begins to go up in flames, after terrorists set it on fire earlier
The night after the massacre, the Head Security coordinator, Roni, informs Hadar and Tomer that the house is completely burned down and their family members are not alive. The bodies of Etty and Sagi were found hugging in bed in the safe room. Itai's body was found on the safe room door along with Soka the dog
Almost two weeks after the massacre, Itai, Etty, and Sagi are laid to rest in the cemetery in Sderot
Friends and family are present at the event. In it, family stories are told, and friends play a song they have written in their memory. At the end of the event, everyone marches to the cemetery of Kibbutz Kissufim and plants four avocado trees
Tomer enlists for reserve duty in her original role as a combat Hummer operator and joins the Situation room in the Gaza Division.
