On Friday, the four members of the Kapshetar family left Be’er Sheva for a camping trip with their friends, Sveta and Slava Giladov, and their three children. They pitched their tents in Ashkelon National Park and planned to stay until midday on Saturday. At dawn on Saturday, a series of explosions echo through the air, jolting them awake. Dina immediately messages the WhatsApp group she shares with Zhenya and their friends: "What is this?" As the two families emerge from their tents, the wail of sirens fills the air
Zhenya, Dina, and their friends glance up at the sky, sensing something unusual is unfolding. Realizing the gravity of the situation, they decide to pack up and leave. With no shelter in the park, Dina and Sveta huddle under a tree with the children while Zhenya and Slava rush to retrieve their cars. They hastily gather their belongings, exchange hurried farewells, and set off—Slava and Sveta driving ahead, with Zhenya and Dina following close behind
Amid the relentless wail of sirens, Dina informs her father that they are speeding home. Zhenya also updates his mother, letting her know they are on their way. Living nearby, she prepares the safe room for their arrival and takes in their dog, Argo, ensuring he won’t be left alone
The Kapshetar family’s and their friend's vehicles speed along the road before eventually parting ways. Their friends head toward Kiryat Gat, while Zhenya and Dina continue toward Sderot. In the WhatsApp group, Dina updates that she and Zhenya notice soldiers and hear gunfire, while Slava tries to determine their location. At 07:24 AM, a roadside camera captures Dina and Zhenya’s car, with their children inside, near the Yad Mordechai junction
Slava navigates the road home with his wife and children under relentless rocket fire. On WhatsApp, he receives a video showing a pickup truck packed with armed terrorists in Sderot and immediately forwards it to Dina and Zhenya, but they do not respond. He dials their numbers repeatedly, but no one answers. It is presumed that at that very moment, their car falls into an ambush, where terrorists lying in wait by the roadside open fire, murdering the entire family
Zhenya and Dina’s family desperately try to reach them, but their calls go unanswered. It was later discovered that their last recorded mobile phone location was near Sapir College, where their car was found two days later
Dina and Zhenya’s parents submit DNA samples to the police. Several days pass before they receive a confirmation of the family’s fate
Dina and Zhenya’s families search for them, but their efforts are futile. Desperate for answers, Dina’s father turns to a friend for help. The friend sets out and eventually locates the Kapshetar family’s car. Though the grim reality is clear to him, he withholds the devastating news from the parents, choosing to wait for official confirmation from the authorities
